ElectroBelly DVD coming soon!

It should have been released by now, but our ElectroBelly DVD is coming soon!
I suspect it will be ready for shipment in about 2 weeks.

It's a raver bellydance performance show with a storyline of nature v/s the post-industrial era.

Included are live music sets by Maurice Rickard (trance, ukulele, guitar) and Life in Balance (quartz crystal singing bowls, world flutes, moog synthesizer and lap steel guitar) and pre-recorded music by Raquy and the Cavemen (progressive middle eastern/bellydance rock) and
Olivia Neutron-Bomb (awesome electronic music including world sounds, drum n bass, progressive, ambient).

I'll post an announcement when the DVD is actually released, but for now you can read more and reserve a copy here:

crazy rave ideas

What are some crazy things you've seen at raves...let me re-phrase that: What are some crazy gadgets, performers, etc. you've seen at raves?

My answer: I went to a rave that had a Moonwalk in it, one of those blow-up tents that you (take your shoes off and) jump around in, like they have at carnivals for kids! It was nuts! It was so much fun! Then when it was time for them to deflate it, myself and some other "kids" couldn't make ourselves get out, and it deflated on us as we danced. The mean bouncer guy yelled "All of you kids get out of there!", to which I responded "I'm not a kid, I'm a bunny!". (I had big fluffy pony tail holders, bunny-like in my hair). Yeah, it deflated on me as a danced my bunny tail around and then couldn't get out.

I think it would rock to take old mattresses that are about to go in the garbage to a rave. Then we can all take turns jumping/dancing on the bed (shoes off, kids!) and throw them away when the rave is over--give those beds a proper good-bye. I thought of this because it would be better for your knees than jumping on a hard floor, and because it would just be so much fun!

A friend just told me he keeps winning Limbo contests, and I thought he meant at a rave!--so another idea there...limbo sticks.

The moonwalk thing made me think of a ball pit like at chuck e cheese...that would be great. A ball pit at a rave.

She's super awesome, and puts her soul into what she does.

My bellydance style comes from the same love that Layla's does...
We are both bellydancing ravers who enjoy sacred dance.

ElectroBelly (a raver-style bellydance show and party) was yesterday in Pittsburgh, and was SOOOO much fun!
I was the organizer and one of the performers. I was so impressed by all of the performers and their costuming, creativity, etc.

The show opened with a set of live electronica by Maurice Rickard (www.mauricerickard.com) and live vocals by Asha Black. My friend Vitriol and I danced to their live music. Then, the show continued to music by various artists on cd, and included glow props such as Isis Wings, glowsticks, glow-wire wrapped stick, glow hacky sacks, finger lights, etc. A breakdancer danced and twirled glowsticks on strings, a VJ projected bellydance visuals on a large screen, and two awesome dj's played great tribal sounds before and after the show.

I'll soon post a full review on my website, but for now here are some photos:
Two burners here looking for a 2bdrm apt in NYC: Queens or Brooklyn (Astoria, LIC, Park Slope, Carroll Gardens, or West Williamsburg), to move in on August 1st. Our max budget is $1400/month. RR or box apt either ok. Nice, safe neighborhood is negotiable depending on price. Any tips or leads would be greatly appreciated as we only have a week left to find where to live.

Thanks!!!!!!!!

Performance Opportunity Survey

If you'll consider being part of a Bellydancing Ravers show:

1--Where do you live? Easy travel to Pittsburgh?

2--What styles of dance do you enjoy doing? What styles of dance do you fuse with bellydance? What raver-ific dance moves and props/toys do you incorporate into your bellydancing?

3--Do you perform? Would you consider visiting Pittsburgh next summer to participate in a performance show of bellydancing ravers?

4--If yes to #3, do you have a video of yourself doing raver/bellydance/fusion fun that you'd be able to send me a copy of, a sort of "audition tape"? (It does NOT have to be a professional tape!!!)...or would you be willing to make one to send?

5--Can you do any of this (on a "professional" level...and by that I mean, would you be able to perform it without "messing up")?:
*Breakdancing
*Hula Hooping with multiple hoops at the same time (like 7 minimum) without dropping them, and on various body parts?
*Very animated dancing
*Wild Spins
*Slides, Glides, Poppin' and Lockin'
*Gymnastic-type stuff
*Crazy tricks
*Dancing with really fun props
*Fire hooping
*Juggle/bellydance combo
*Very impressive prop-balancing while dancing
*Very impressive prop-movement such as rolling a ball all around on your body while dancing, but not dropping it...Or...UNIQUE glowstick use...etc.

*Those are just some ideas...let me know what you can do! Post the answers here in this discussion on tribe...but send the personal info/essay via mail.

I'm looking for REAL RAVERS, Raver-ific fun, and people who blend bellydance with raver-type dancing. The "REAL RAVERS" part is very important to me. I am not looking for people who don't genuinely love electronic music, or performers who have never been to a rave. I'm not looking for the typical bellydance troupe or typical dance school graduate.
I'm looking for
Bellydancing Ravers!!!!

Also, non-bellydancers, who are kick-@ss with the other dance skills are totally welcome.

Details for the show are not complete...ideas are "in-the-making".
I'd like the show to take place in Summer '06 here in Pittsburgh, PA.

I am not a big company, I'm an individual, and can't afford to pay for anyone's travel expenses, pay performers, etc. So, this show will be made up of volunteers, and will either be a fundraiser for a charity OR the performers will ALL split the door fees after show expenses (So, in other words, it's safest to assume you won't make any money, and if we all make some, it will be a nice surprise).

The show will be advertised on my website, and local media.

Audition Information:
Anyone who is interested may send an audition tape (professional or home made) which shows a sample of the talent you'd like to perform in the show.
Audition performance should be between 3-6 minutes. ALL performers who would like to be in the show must send an audition tape, and all performers in your party must be part of the audition tape (For example: Please don't send a tape of two people if there are 3 people involved in your performance).

Information to include (EACH dancer on tape):
*Contact Information--Real Name, Stage Name (if you have one), Telephone Number, Mailing Address
*Essay including:
*Description of the dance you are auditioning to do
*Information about your history as a dancer/life as a dancer
*Information about your history as a raver/lover of and dancer to electronic music
*Past Performance Information (If Any)
*Other talents and interests
*Other Details you'd like to include

Healing Arts By Amethyst
P.O. Box 22153
Pittsburgh, PA 15222

At some point, the information about the event, auditions, etc. will be on my website (www.HealingArtsByAmethyst.com), but isn't there yet.

Thanks and bellyrolls,
Amethyst

I was talking with my hairdresser yesterday, asking her what types of fun things she can do with hair. She mentioned that another hairdresser she knows did some sort of partial up-do to a raver's hair, using glowsticks in her hair! How fun!

Anyone have some truly unique and funky raver hair pictures to post? Anyone have any cool hair stories to tell?

rave promoter perspective question

Hi dancers. I have a question for anyone that may have performed at a rave. Have you had any problems with people being disrespectful while doing routines?

The reason I ask is that I am most likely going to have a troupe dance at a festival I am doing next year and want to make sure they are treated with respect. I have only really seen bellydancing at burns, so unsure how it would go over in a rave / festival atmosphere. Also, any advice with making sure the atmosphere is right that would be awesome too! I am also wrestling with many quick performances for 1 or 2 bigger performances, but I can talk that over with the women performing :)

Any suggestions for an electronic music song that I could use to bellydance to, which is dark, spooky and creepy for Halloween?

I want some weird dark creepy music, or music with a haunting voice or quality about it.

I guess if I can't find that, I'll go with a mysterious sound if anyone can suggest any songs.

Just thought I'd add some noise to this tribe and show off my latest creation!

I'm actually starting up a little hair fall business called Layla's Locks and I like to create what I call "tribal fusion hair" although this latest peice is a bit more on the candy raver side. I just wore it to a party last night and it was a HUGE hit, very blacklight reactive! I've posted a picture in this tribe and there are many more in my profile of other hair falls.

I'm actually selling some of these so if any of you are interested in any, or custom work, please get in touch!

www.laylaslocks.com is comming soon!

Thanks for looking,

Holy manic craziness--

I've been manic lately, and have been starting to get interested in a million things, and actually have the energy to do them!!!

I have a newly found interest in STILT WALKING!!!!! I can't sleep, and if I do, I dream of stilt walking. I am obsessing over wanting to learn, but can't find anyone in my area to teach me! By some crazy chance, anyone know of anyone in or around pittsburgh that stilt walks?

Do any of you stilt walk, or have friends that do? Ever seen a stilt walker at a rave?

I've always loved the movie "The Dark Crystal" (Jim Henson), and at the end of the tape they show the "making of" and it includes stilt walking. It has always fascinated me, but suddenly I want to DO it!

Up at 6:48 a.m. drooling at pics of stilt walkers...

...more drool...

DJ Layla hosts Global In_Fusion radio, Mondays 8-10pm PST

Just a little thing I do every week that I thought you all would enjoy, being bellydance ravers and all... I play bellydance music at raves!

Every Monday on SoBroken Radio (www.sobroken.com) from 8-10 PST, DJ Layla hosts Global In_Fusion Radio; 2 hours of electronica infused with sounds from all around the world. On this musical journey you're likely to hear downbeats to drum n' bass and anything in between. You’ll hear tracks from artists like Nitin Sawhney, Natacha Atlas, Thievery Corporation, Solace, Dead Can Dance, Deep Forest, and Talvin Singh, just to name a few. Tune in for a truly worldly experience!

DJ Layla – a brief herstory

Since beginning her sonic journey as a DJ in late 2000, Layla has come full circle to the music that originally inspired her to look deeper into the world of electronica. It has been labeled “Asian Underground,” “Arabesque,” and “worldtronica” by different sources, but to Layla, it sounds like home. Layla’s years of experience behind the decks have given her a unique feel for the energy of a room, and the ability to play sets that ride that wave and create a truly transformational experience for the listener. Layla believes that music and sound are pathways to spiritual transformation, and views each of her sets as an opportunity to share her passion for music that deeply touches her soul.

New things I'm trying, and you?

I'm about to share a fun story about new interests of mine, and things I'm trying to learn. Please share your stories, too.

Today I got together with a friend to play in my dance studio. I bought hula hoops yesterday, and want to learn to use them like crazy. So, today, we took turns doing some fun things. We did bellydancing, sword dancing and hula hooping all at the same time. For me this is a new experience, so I was pretty excited. I didn't think I'd be able to balance a sword on my head while hula hooping and turning in a circle, but I can! Woo-hooo!

We even managed to pass the sword to each other while hooping.

We tried candle dancing, too, holding a candle in each hand. We don't really know how, but we taught ourselves a little bit today. It was tons of fun.

Have a story about trying something that's new to you?
